Actually the EJ257 shortblock is quite stout. It's the earlier naturally aspirated EJ25D DOHC and EJ251 SOHC blocks that are weak. Wimpy piston ringlands, open deck, etc. Even the EJ20 isn't as strong as the '257.
The only weak point of the system for moderate to higher power levels is the stock hyperutectic piston. Good tuning, octane and intercooling will prevent detonation and piston death.

it might be stout but its not the best suby motor. it doesnt handle upgrades as well as a 2.0 will. hence me saying its weaksauce.
