I don't think you can blame the spectators... Plenty of us have been present at an event one time or another where we weren't being a rail and a car could have lost control and ran us over.. The difference is, we were watching in anticipation of the full event, not an expectation of a 50ft burnout or less (there was a rail for the first 50ft), and the dude feathers the gas into the crowd.
It's a shame.
