What I do in my freetime(at 1am that is)

Started putting at this 962 nonsense drawings and designs into CAD now.

Got the rear upright 90% done. Needs a few tweaks here and there. Cosmos says it'll hold lots of side load so that's cool. Radial mount brake tabs for Brembo monoblock calipers, 7005 material, symmetrical design so one spare will fit either side of the car in the event of a needed(and inevitable) repair track/street side. It's a bit overboard for the weight of this car but I'm building it to last, not to be the lightest car out there. Anodized for corrosion resistance. All the fun stuff, nothing fancy

What do you think?

Fuckin bad-ass man. I gotta get playin with GIBBS, I haven't even installed it yet. Got a question about your choice of aluminum: isn't 7000 series fairly brittle? I thought that's why 6000 series was always a better choice since it has more give and is less likely to break. I would rather have my car act a little strange than to be taken out altogether if I were to hit something.

7005 is actually quite strong and used in aircraft frame manufacture. I don't want flex in this area anyway. If I hit anything hard and fast enough to break that upright(according to the stress analysis I derived from Cosmos) I've got bigger problems to worry about

6061 T6 is commonly used as it's far cheaper and easier to come by. Alot of aftermarket stuff(bov's, wastgate diaphram bodies, etc) is actually 6063 "relabled" as 6061...

Yes. Cosmos(M) is Solidworks version of stress analysis. Design a part in Solidworks, run it through Cosmos and apply the load factors and it'll tell you where the most stress is, what is going to result in cracks/risers, and other variables. The program can also tell you what will happen to the structure with a change in temperature based on the material you are using for the part itself. So if you build a compressor bucket for a gas turbine, Cosmos will tell you what stress the part will be under when subjected to superheated steam(~1000 degrees) versus just being at room temperature.

Also allows me to see thermal energy transfer/absorbsion, assemble multible CADs into a complete unit with function(IE a crankshaft and connecting rod), and a host of other stuff.

I use Cosmos flow works for exhaust header design. It's a fluid dynamic flow program, part of Solidoworks

That's pretty awesome. I wish I had learned to use solidworks, but when I was going to RPI, they were still using ProEngineer, so thats what I got to learn.

Ah well, I forgot everything anyways. So, now I can only design that stuff in 3D modeling programs haha

Inboard shock suspension bell cranks done These will give me some adjustable ratios to work with when tuning in the spring rates and allow adjustable ride height on the fly via a pull pin, not to mention the air lift for the front nose to get in and out of driveways, p-lots, etc

Oh that is freaking cool. How are you fitting the air lift to the Ultima parts?

I'm not ...... The whole reason I'm doing all the CAD is becasue they won't sell me ANY of their components like uprights, hubs, etc, etc that would save me a whole hell of alot of time and effort.

My CAD skills were getting rusty anyway so this is a good thing...

I want to use Penske's all around but to do so with an airlift front setup is going to be a bit of a trick to make it function at the touch of a button. It's not something that I really want to add to the car(excess weight) but unfortunately it's going to be a necessary evil with a ground clearance as low as this car will have. I need to develop a way to integrate the two systems but do so that the airlift doesn't restrict the Penske's in any way when the system is not being used. nothing I'm worried about yet. the suspension is the same all the way up to the bellcranks no matter what setup I eventually use.
