Toyota FT-86 Concept

Quote:
Toyota's President Akio Toyoda has said that Toyota is in desperate need of an excitement injection, and here's the first dose: the Toyota FT-86 Concept.

Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the '80s, the FT-86 concept was designed by the automaker's ED2 styling studio in France and bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back.

Unfortunately, Toyota hasn't released much information about the FT-86's platform, but we do know that it's powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four sending power to the rear wheels. Toyota focused on keeping the weight down to improve handling and, according to one source, the platform is unique to the concept. The engine sits lower in the engine bay to aid aerodynamics while keeping the center of gravity in check, and the overall dimensions of Toyota's new 2+2 are 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches.

After the FT-86 bows in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, the production model will be shown sometime next year with sales beginning sometime in late 2011 with a sticker somewhere north of $20,000.

not liking the zipper dash all that much. Looks way too cheesy. But the rest of it looks pretty sick.

I was thinking the same thing. Who the heck integrates zippers into an interior of a vehicle? Stupidest idea ever.

This had better come with more power than the 140hp they initially claimed. If it has a 2.0L boxer, I guarantee WRX swaps will be done the very first day it leaves the dealership floor.

If this comes out and it's as light cheap and RWD as they say it is.. then it will be the first new car in a decade that I've actually been interested in.

I really hope Nissan has a response to this.

I'm still trying to figure out how this is a tribute to the original AE86. The thing that made the AE86 what it was, was the high-revving inline-4 with the Yamaha designed, twin cammed head, AKA the 4AG. This thing is a disgrace to the AE86.

The 4age engine had a stock redline of 7500 from the factory, which isn't bad especially for that era. The 2.0L boxer motor in japan has a stock 8k redline in turbo form. I'm sure they can build this one to rev nicely, but what worries me more is their original power rating and the fact that this car doesn't exactly look like it's going to be a 2000lb machine. The original AE86 could make 140hp with bolt ons. That was 25 years ago. They do anything less than 180 in this thing and i'll be disappointed.

It needs a 2zzge mounted longitudinally, with more aggressive camshafts and engine mapping. A 200hp, 8500rpm, 6 speed machine that stays under 2300lbs would be tits. To me, THAT would be an AE86 tribte, not a car with a subaru engine.

I agree on the weight and power... I don't think there's anything wrong with using a subaru motor though... personally the boxer is my favorite 4-banger
