I have done quite a bit of research and I recently bought a new TV myself. I went with a 61" JVC HD-ILA which is LCoS technology. (Basically the good from both LCD and DLP TV's)
LCD TV's are nice for their brightness and the fact that you can mount them on a wall, but IMO going with a DLP TV is the best bang for the buck or you can look into the two companies that are doing this LCoS stuff. JVC and their HD-ILA technology and then Sony and their XRD stuff. Definitely go with 1080p either way. Right now VERY little will utilize 1080p, but it would be kinda stupid to go out and buy a new TV without it. (If you already had a 720p TV it wouldn't be worth upgrading just to get 1080p, but since you are shopping new go with 1080p)
