Do you happen to know the model# of the panasonic one? If I can get one that cheap I may try it out.
Opinions on the Samsung DVD-HD960? It is one of the first that upconverts to 1080p. Also, do you think the upconverting capabilities of these DVD players outdoes the upconverting capabilities of the TV? If not, it would really make more sense to just get anything with an HDMI output and let the TV do the work.

Upconversion is crap imo as it doesn't even come close to a true 1080i/p signal. I've compared the same movies on my upconverting Toshiba DVD player to the same movie on my Toshiba HD-DVD player and there is a HUGE difference on a 1080i capable tv.
I also did this comparison with the first Blu-Ray player that Samsung came out with and it was much less of a difference. I tested with 5th Element and I wasn't impressed at all. That's why I returned it and went with the HD-DVD player.
I honestly don't think either format has enough momentum right now to be declared a winner. I kind of hope something else comes along and surpasses both formats the way DVD's dropkicked laser discs out the door.

well i totally agree that a format that comes natively as 1080 is going to blow a format that is natively somewhere between 480-540 lines away, think about it, your depending on a relitively weak processor to create new pixels to fill in the spaces between the old ones
the better question would be does leaving a good old dvd in standard definition look better then upconverting it, i haven't comared the 2, so i really couldn't say, but it would depend heavily on the quality of the upconverting chip used in your dvd player

Exactly. Everything I have seen, regardless of which upconverting DVD player they are talking about, the difference is HUGE going from standard progressive scan DVD quality to an upconverted DVD.
So upconverting is better than standard, but obviously nowhere near HD-DVD/Blu-Ray which I won't spend the money on now anyway.

Huge difference between analog and upconversion and huge difference between upconversion and HD. The problem is the struggle between the two formats. We need the winner!

Thats why I vote for what LG is trying to do with the dual format thing that way the individual consumer can decide which one they want to support.

Yeah that LG unit is a good breakthrough, but I think because this is more consumer oriented, one standard will prevail. Unlike with computers, where DVD+ and DVD- both remain contenders...mainly because they are pretty much identical.

I really think HD and Blu-Ray are near identical too as far as quality goes. You just get the added storage capability with Blu-Ray.

Yeah, when pushing the storage limits of the disc becomes an issue, then blu-ray would probably stand out, but by the time they push 50gb in a movie, we'll probably be on another standard...
