while the ps3 seems like it would be a big deal for blu ray, its still less then a million homes, which is a great start, but keep in mind they didn't really view dvd as taking off till it had 20-30% penetration in the home market, even with the ps3, blu ray is still in the range of 2% of homes
i think sony almost killed both the ps3 and blu ray all in one shot not having enough units to supply the world with upon launch. So many people just went with the other choice being the Wii, and look how thats taken off, you still can't find a Wii around buffalo, but ps3's are sitting on the shelf...

Yes, but there weren't enough Wii's at launch either. Granted there were more than PS3, but still nowhere near enough which is pretty obvious since you still can't find them anywhere.
I don't think Sony killed themselves at all. Xbox released the same number of units as the PS3 did and they are doing fine.

I don't know of a single person in the market for a ps3 that would say " F the ps3" and settle for the wii instead. They are completely different.
Just cause supplies were limited at launch doesn't mean all is screwed. People in the market for an HD/blu ray player will see the ps3 as a great value since its a game console as well... which makes it a good deal, IMO. and why I think blu-ray will win.

there are over 1million ps3 in US homes. Although that is not a lot, there are far less HD DVD players out..... advantage bluray

well think of it this way, not many people have tons of cash to drop on multiple game systems, the wii's sold nearly 2 million units by xmas, to the ps3's like 400k
pre launch you heard very little about the wii, everyone was all pumped for the ps3, all of a sudden, you hear virtually nothing about the ps3, but because the wii was able to capitalize on the supply issues with the ps3 and get a little extra market penetration, its really caught on, and probably cost sony some sales in the long run, and definitly hurt sales short term
anywho, i'm just saying that blu ray is far from taking off, 600k units is nothing in terms of having a universally accepted format, let me know when they've sold 6 million blu ray or hd dvd players, then we'll have an idea of which if either are coming out on top

It's not really a waste. There will be no dominant standard in this high def format for a while. And even if HD-DVD does not win out in the end my player doesnt stop working and it doesn't force me to rebuy everything in the winning format since presumably there will not be a quality difference. So the money spent on either next gen platform is not at all a waste. I enjoy watching a lot of movies so the investment in a hd system is well worth it to me.

Well, I just gotta say that HD looks AMAZING on this TV. I was able to watch the Super Bowl in HD with the use of a $25 Phillips antenna, which I highly recommend for picking up OTA HD stations. I haven't even had the chance to calibrate the TV and I was blow away by how clear and sharp the image was.
For thos interested in trying out the antenna, its a Phillips PHDTV1 antenna and I got it from Circuit City for 25 bucks. Go to antennaweb.org and put in your address and it will tell you which way to point the antenna for the available stations near you.

I picked up a Olevia 32" LCD HDTV on saturday, and I had to "test" it out by hooking up my xbox 360 and playing it in hd Looks awesome. Ghost Recon is just amazing in 1080i.
