what a day DoS attack

man I had a great day tday one of the students used a boot disk on a couple of computers that generated arp requests and DoS's my whole darn network. I tracked the ip down and killed the attack but what a pita the buggers brought my network down to a crawl with a script kiddie toy :-( I guess I am not god yet! oh well thought I would share my geeky tale of woe.

the sad thing is I was all comfortable thinking I had blocked off all possible Dos's and I missed one and then got hit right between the eyes with it. It wasnt huge to stop it but with the traffic it was generating it was difficult to even get my machine to respond to try to track it. wireshark/ethereal kicks butt not network guy should be without it! Mike should like this. My windows boxs were slowed down to a crawl with all the traffic but my fedora box was working like a champ so it was a god send in tracking down the offending computers.

heres a wierd side effect of the DoS attack. about 20 machines in my network lock up when trying to use word excell etc especially when trying to print or if you try to open printers directory. I found a wierd way of fixing it basically disconnect them from the network log in using cached credentials and remove all printers. restart and run my printer install script and all is well again. I have no clue what would cause the issue but at least I have a fix for it. big pain in the neck is I have to go to every machine affected which on a campus of this size is a pain in itself. anyone ever ran into anything like that?
