Home theater

I'm looking at getting a home theater system again, as I haven't had speakers or used my receiver in several years. I'm looking at the Yamaha RX-V863BL for a receiver. It looks to be pretty decent with 7.2 capability, hdmi switching, sirius capability, hd radio, etc. It goes for about $899 on B&H.

I'm also looking at some of the Yamaha High Performance speakers which are very reasonably priced at like $180 for each front speaker, and like $120 for bookshelfs for the rear.

What do you all think?

We just got a 52" Samsung LCD to replace our 6 year old HDTV rear projection. We also have a Yamaha S2500 DVD player which is one of the better DVD players out there. It had a $700 price tag about 3 years ago. I figured going with yamaha components to the home theater would be a good combination.

I was going to recommend looking at some Onkyo and Denon products, but then I saw your last sentance.

Yamaha makes some real nice stuff too, I think thats a good choice.

I've got a Yamaha HTIB... it's legit. Their products are kick-ass. If you're looking for some serious stuff, I know Harmon/Kardon and Klipsch make some ridiculous things.

it all depends on what you want i na system. the onkyo HTIB's are kic kass i did some installs on the highest i think the htsr 901 its AMAZING the quality of the sound was just shockign and we didnt even have them set up just lined them up next to the tv and ist sounded like we were in a movie theatre. that price tag is near 1000+ but WELL worth it. Bose has some excellent sound quality for there surround systems. but it all depends if you want to make your own or buy a htib me personally i cant afford onkyo as much as i want it im going to go all sony and not buyign a htib i have 4 bookshelf speakers that sound alright, im gettign the sa-w2500 subwoofer and a sony center channel speaker. and for my reciever the sony strdg500 i believe it is. im using it mostly for the dual HDMI ports because my tv only has one :'( but thats my .02 (i used to work at Circuit City heh)edit: i almost forgot denon also is a really good one like JiM P said denon is right up there near Onkyo edit again: and remember always use monster cable !! lol

ha monster cable is overpriced crap imo... if I do this right I'll use audioquest interconnects, not that I really need them since pretty much everything will be over hdmi.

The yami has 3 in / 1 out for hdmi and does hdmi upconvert, so I think it will pass component over hdmi. It would make it nice to only have 1 hdmi cable from the tv to the receiver and then just wire everything to the receiver. The only thing I don't know is if it passes audio upstream via hdmi also...

be sure about that HDMI on the reciever before the purchase. I've run into recievers that dont convert component to HDMI. I have also seen recievers that will only use HDMI for video, where an optical or digital coax is required. I use the Denon 1908's quite a bit and love the way work, it's low on the line and there are plenty more features you can get out of Denon if you need it...
