GMX's 03 Evo VIII

Went to see our very own GranMassaX and his Evo VIII this evening. Vehicle was tuned by "Shop X" a couple years ago and he had asked me to stop by and look at the tune sometime. THANK GOD we were able to get together. I downloaded his map and had a good look through everything...it (in my eyes) was a catastrophy waiting to happen. 23 degrees of timing at peak tq, fuel in the 9's throughout the range of the map (would imagine making car run mid 10's afr, WAY too rich for an Evo). We headed to GMX's personal closed circuit course which worked out well for logging 3rd gear pulls. First pull...OMG! Right off the rip...11-13-17-17-17-20!!! <-KNOCK @ 3600-3800-4000-4200-4400-4600! Thank god he's been driving the car like a 16 year old girl with a feather foot since he had gotten the tune or I can only imagine what could've happen. Spent quite a bit of time sorting through and rebuilding timing/fuel tables, adjusting a few things to accomodate for his cams, and went back to logging. After a few passes and a couple more tweaks, EGT's were reading nice @ WOT (only way to guess at his fuel, as he doesn't have a wideband....but every Defi gauge known to man...baller) and at peak torque on the pulls he was making 0/1 count(s) of knock. Glad that's sorted out. I'd like to see what it makes on a dyno now in comparison to what it made when he had it tuned @ "Shop X". I'd imagine he was losing a LOT of power due to the knock/car pulling loads of timing.

Thank you for the beer

Wow! I'd like to know who shop X is, please pm, email or call me. Just curious, because before you did my tune I was considering having it done elsewhere. Is this shop located in CT or Jersey? Glad you were able to straighten it out for him.

Edit: Nevermind I seen where it was done. I don't think I've ever heard anything good about them.

Yeah, I was really in shock as to what I had witnessed. The VIII's run about twice as much timing as the IX's which equates to 10ish* at peak tq...they had it set to double that. I'm still distraught over the whole thing. I don't know how they get away with letting a car leave like that.

I'm happy that Justin was able to sort it all out, but pretty pissed that the existing tune was such shit. Times have changes and the reputation of the shop I went to def has changed since I went... over 3 years ago. At that time they had the fastest evo (at 9.79 or something close) and they were putting out some seriously nice evos. But maybe I got in right when they started to take turn for the worse... awesome!

so there! I least I had a valid excuse for never driving it, right?

Yeah man. As I said I'm thankful that you drove it as little as you did because with those knock counts it was just a matter of time before the car self destructed. When we do a dyno day at moon at the end of the month I'm demanding that you come (it's only $60, you gotta man up) so I can see what the AFR's are like and make any necessary adjustments to make sure it's silky smooth. I'm sure Seth won't mind if I hop in between runs to make a few more changes to the fuel map. Even if I have to bring your car up if you can't find the time on a Sunday afternoon, it's coming. By hook or by crook, that Evo WILL be there

That's scary. Do not let anyone tune your car without you watching there every move. If you do not understand what they are doing, then do not do the fuel upgrades. Just a rule of thumb. No tune is EVER final so you can't just really set it and forget it. Shit happens, things changes. Tweaks are always needed.

Glad Justin was able to resolve it. Massa is very capable and probably assumed everything was fine.

Massa: You should pick up some sort of datalogger or something to make sure everything is fine every now and then. Glad you are a puss with the car to avoid any problems.
