My STI is alive again, here's what happened

The drivers side Intake cam broke. Cosworth 278/274 AVCS cams with 4k miles. There was no other damage to the engine! Wear on the cam buckets, lobes, and bearings looked normal. There was no "smoking gun" besides the broken cam. And there was no indication of a build problem or a tune problem.

Cosworth replaced all 4 cams, no questions asked. The timing belt and tensioner were replaced. The lower uppipe gasket was totally destroyed! Also replaced.

Needless to say, I have my car back after a little over a month of downtime, and about half the time we were waiting for the cams to come back.

I fixed most of the drivability issues in a 10 minute tuning session - the ECU fuel map is really sensitive at low rpms and things were off just a bit. I ran it up to 15psi... the car feels great and sounds absolutely nutty. I datalogged both the ECU and the UTEC and everything looks good. More boost tomorrow

Thanks to Synapse for getting my car in and out of the shop so quickly! I think I might sleep in my car tonight.

Maybe. Dragstrip on Saturday is more likely. I'll be out and about this weekend.

I forgot that I have to work on Sunday from 10am to hopefully 12-1pm. We are making a pretty big, high-pressure network change at work. If the change fails somebody is gonna get fired, so I am not going to risk making this change while I'm on the road.

Saturday is still looking good for LVD though, provided we get some dry roads between now and then. I bet that replacing the uppipe gasket will give me another MPH or two in the quarter.

I heard the car had a few problems. Did you fix them? Something with the heads and some oil leaks? I didn't get the whole story.

Mucho problems again.

I am gonna pull the plugs and do a compression test tonight. At best a plug is fouled. On cold startup it fires on all 4, but if you give it any boost at all, it turns into a 3cyl. It started last night on a 22-23psi pull. This morning I was gonna pull things apart and check the plugs, but the car started up and drove around the neighborhood fine. I tried a 14psi pull on the way to work and a cyl dropped again.

What are the odds that the same thing happened again?
