Paint & Body Help

Thought this would be a good place to offer our services. If anyone has any questions on body work related stuff, ask away. We're happy to help if we can. (I realize this sounds like a shameless plug by the way...but really, we'll help I swear!) We'd rather see you do it right on your own the first time, than have to bring it to us to fix. Getting it right the first time saves everyone time and money. So again, please feel free to ask questions.

Thanks again,
Evo

For starters, sandblasting/mediablasting is the only way to start this process. If you try to paint wheels that are coated already, it will only hold up for a short time. So from there, one coat of etch primer, followed by a good scuffing. Follow that with 2-3 coats of a good high build primer. Let the primer cure for as long as possible, (at least a week without uv lamps or sun exposure.) Then, wet sand with 400 grit first, then with 600 grit. After a final scuff with an ultra fine pad, you're ready for paint. From here it's easy, three coats of base, 3-4 coats of clear. This process will leave a pretty strong finish for average driving. If you're gonna beat on the wheels though, I suggest going with a single stage enamel, or an industrial coating like Dupont's Imron. The prep work is the same either way. Hope that's what you're looking for.

Hey, I'm restoring a 1976 280Z, just came from my shop ( I do fiberglass composites) from tearing apart the hood, hatch, and front fenders. In the next month, I'm going to be building a rotissary at Mahany ( a welding supply and school) in Rochester.

The unibody frame is the best I've seen on an unrestored 280, but there's still work to be done. I'll be posting progress pics on one of the local forums that you're on as well, but will direct questions here for the tidbits. Looks like you guys specialize in the off body restoration I'm in the process of doing, but I'm a first timer

I wouldnt mind checking out your shop sometime, I'm good friends with Brett and can't wait to see his VW you guys are doing when it's done.

Cya!

Thanks for the comments! Sounds like you're taking on a pretty involved project. Before you build a "car twirler" it may be worth your time to look around on the internet. There are many companies offering really nice units at pretty fair prices. (This of course coming from a shop owner who uses a home build model.) Just a suggestion. Anyways....we'd love to have you stop out to the shop to see things, and we'll be happy to help with any advice we can give. Good luck with the Z!
