best paint for wheels?

ok so i'm painting my rims and dupli-color makes a black wheel paint which i am gunna use but they don't make a red which i want to use for the lip of the rims... my question is this

what paint should i use for the red.. i was thinking the dupli-color red caliper paint would be fine since i had the same paint on my caliper already and i'm not really looking for an exact match to my paint i just want a red.. i will be clearing the wheels after i paint them.. so should i use the caliper paint or juse regular paint?... any suggestions would be awsome

thanks

Lately I've been using alot of acrylic based paints, but my only suggestion it to hit the surface with a 300-350 grit foam sanding block before you paint, and if there's a need to clear coat it (there's no need for acrylic paints) sand the color with the same block before you clear. This prevents anything flaking off the rims later.

Thinking about painting a set of mine too. Use VHT or Wurth Wheel Paint, its tough as nails.

from what i've seen tho the caliper paint would be the best bet only b/c it's made for brake dust and abuse but i'll try the VHT if thats what poeple are suggesting.

oh and i've already sand blasted the wheels down to bare metal and today i finally shot them with 2 lays of primer.. hopefully on saturday i can shoot one more layer of primer.. sand them down with an 800 grit paper and then spray 3 lays of black, then tape off the inside of the rim and paint the lip red with 2 lays over the black (wetsanding every layer as i go) and then clearing them with 2 coats of clear.. i have about 8 hours into the rims now and i plan on putting another 30 into them.. i want these to last a good 2 years and i figure with the tires off the rims now is the best time

You're plan is pretty much fine, everything should work out. The only thing I saw that caught my eye was the 800 grit sanding step. 800 grit is quite excessive, especially for the paint you're using. Save yourself some time and struggle and drop down to 600. Normal basecoat will cover 400 grit marks, even with a little shrink over time. 600 should be more than enough for caliper paints.

On another note, if you ever plan on painting these again, don't use duplicolor. That shit has to be blasted or chemical stripped off before you even think about coating over it.

Good luck....post some pics when they're done!

yea i was gunna powder coat them but i don't like these rims that much.. paint is basicly just to hold me over for the next 2 years.. with my car having a weird bolt pattern (5x110) it's hard to find a rim i like to find it.. this basicly lets me wait for more to come out.. i really want a set of volks for the car

i'll post pics a little later with them primered up
