I was looking up that engine and I see that the head flows opposite of the 420A and the exhaust is on the firewall side. Never even noticed that before.

Yes, 420a true designation only came in '95-'99 eclipse/talon and avenger/sebring models. Neon RT came with 2.0L DOHC reverse flow 420a variant, but not true 420a. One stout motor when built with forged internals. HRC has been known to pull well over 700hp out of their boosted 420a's with nothing more than forged rods/pistons/arp rod bolts....no other engine work. Not even cams.

I went through three motor variant builds before the last motor in my car, the 2.4L/420a hybrid. 420a ITB, 420a turbo, 420a 9.5:1 CR for more torque, 2.4 hybrid. Somewhere in the neighborhood ~450fwhp in it's final trim. 452 seems to stick in my mind. Don't remember the torque but I snapped p-side axles like clockwork doing hard 5th gear pulls on the highway. Kept a spare and the needed tools to change out in the trunk. Swapped out the 3.94 transmission for neon SOHC 3.55 transmission for the taller gears as the 3.94's were completely useless(that's when axles started breaking).

Still miss it :/

Yup, on my boosted car, I ran a 3.55 trans. It would let me get into low 120's in the quarter without shifting into 5th gear. I don't know what i'm going to be doing this spring. I am hopefully going to get a tall enough tire under there so that I can stay in 4th with my 3.94, but I'm not sure of it yet. Time will tell.

My internals are for turbo applications, and result in 8.1:1 compression, so I am decking the head .045" and then removing the .023" shim in the head gasket for a compression closer to 10:1. It will be a bit more ..... fun

The only problem I'm running into is weight of the pistons. I am limited to a rev limit around 7200 rpm. I ran this for a whole year and had no problems, but I am really nervous of cranking it up any more. Without going to a lighter piston, they are known to just grenade from stresses of spinning them any higher.

It was quite the surprise. I was so sneaky with it at first, no one knew what I had done. I'll never forget the night I went out racing and beat our buddy's mustang. I beat him 3x, and then they swapped out drivers and then swapped in a new bottle. We went one more time on the way home, and I had 2 other passengers.

When we freight trained past him, my roommate was waving like a jackass, haha. When we all go to the track and I run into those guys, they still remember that and I always hear the classic "man, that thing was serious".
