DLP vs. LCD
Hey guys, im getting a new tv this week, im between a 42-50 inch LCD od DLP, ive noticed the the DLP tvs I have been looking at are a little cheaper, the picture IMO looks better also. How are these tvs? are they as durable and reliable as a lcd? let me know.
And Im not considering a plasma at all, i play games too much

DLP will be better for you as you do a lot of gaming. It currently has a much higher refresh rate than any LCD. IMO you should get a 5 yr warranty with a DLP though (so long as it includes the lamps) to avoid repair costs. LCD on the other hand...can't repair dead pixels. DLP FTW for Walt IMO

My vote is for DLP out of those two, but I would also look at the LCoS TV's. DLP's processing is done on a single chip and the LCoS TV's use individual chips so you get better color and no "rainbow effect" which is common on DLP TV's.
The LCoS TV's also have user replaceable lamps which run about 200 bucks. I got the 4 year warranty on mine though which covers the first bulb replacement.

I would say LCD. I'm a big fan of the way things look on LCD. Very smooth color and refresh rates for LCD's are down in the 8ms range now, so thats not really an issue anymore.
Like I posted in the other thread, I've been playing my xbox360 on the 32" LCD and it looks amazing. Plus having a thin TV is much better than a very wide one. DLP, LCoS, etc are all very deep.

DLP's use a color wheel with a lamp. The lamp can go bad and needs to be replaced. I've owned my 52" Toshiba DLP for 2 years w/o issues. It is quite heavy but much much smaller than a rear projection. The contrast on DLPs are quite impressive.

Another reason to go with LCoS. No more color wheel spinning ridiculously fast to generate the colors. My TV weighs about 100 pounds which isn't bad considering its size. Now my TV isn't 4 inches deep, but I believe its around 12 inches or so which isn't terrible, although still not wall mountable if thats what you want to go for.
Really what y ou need to do is do a trade between all the technologies and list a bunch of features/categories that you think are important in a big screen TV. You then mark which technology is best for that particular category and whichever technology shows up the most "wins."

I was in your shoes about 2 months ago, debating between LCD and DLP. I did ungodly amounts of research on a number of forums and sites. In the end, my suggestion would be to let your eyes and wallet decide. Whichever store you end up at, find the sets you're interested in and grab the remotes for them. Set all the settings on each universally meaning brightness, contrast, tone, color etc..all the same and let your eyes do the comparison.
Here's a thread taken from another forum that I frequent. It's nice guideline that may help you in your decision.
Oh and I highly suggest you get it calibrated properly after it makes it's way into your living room. Check out Digital Video Essentials. If you or anyone you know has Netflix you can also get it from there.
For the record I ended up going with a Samsung DLP. Good luck!

I just picked up a copy of DVE myself and I am going to sit down and calibrate my TV and surround sound within the next week or so.
I was dead set on a Samsung DLP for the longest time and then I saw the JVC and Sony LCoS sets and immediately fell in love with them. After doing lots of research between the LCoS sets and the Samsung DLP's, I ended up with the JVC D-ILA.

Careful about viewing in store. They are on 24/7 and retards play with the settings.

Yea, thats why you need to grab the remotes and mess with the settings to put TV's that you want to compare in a similar setting.
You can also check the number of hours the lamp has been used in almost all TV's now.

speaking of tv's...mine just shit the bed 4 years later. Samsung Projection HDTV...blue lamp has gone along with the convergence circuit board. 500+ to fix it so I'm probably going to just buy a new set and sell mine to a repair shop for a couple of bucks. Can't justify fixing it at that price especially with its age
