Not having a license for 4 years has made me keep my car 100% legal at all times and if I do get a ticket, pay the thing that day or go to court. My license was suspended for a majority of that time, and the 1 year revokation was not my fault, I was driving a friends car. How was I supposed to know that it wasn't insured?

Nope, I have never had to deal with those types of consequences because I make sure I pay all my fines that I get (which aren't really any) and make sure my insurance is always paid.
Eric, your circumstance is different though, driving for 4.5 years without a license is different.

I got pulled over for no front plate on the thruway... cost me $125 bucks!!! Oh well, live and learn... my car now wears its ugly front plate... Maybe I will register it in VT (you dont have to live there to register it there) and alleviate the issue... its gotta be cheaper to insure that way....

unfortunately, now VT requires proof of residence to register a car or obtain a license. I'd looked into this option.
besides, your insurance company might have a cow insuring a vermont car with a new york driver's license and residence.
If anybody's down to head out to bennington and grab some PO boxes, that's a different story I'd be game.
