I have never been a big fan of teams where I am from, BUT I do follow the teams and still root for them; they are just not my favorite team. I cannot stand NY teams, but I am not from NY either. I grew up 1.5 hours outside of Boston. So I usually root for teams like the Celtics, Pats and Red Sox...unless they are playing against my favorite teams.
They way I chose my favorite teams growing up was mainly by theplayers on the teams and who I enjoyed watching. I have not changed my favorite teams since I picked them when I was like 10 years old. I don't think anyone can accuse me of being a front runner either since my teams haven't done much in YEARS.
I think that everyone has a right to choose their own favorite team and not be "obligated" to root for the team where they reside. BUT I do think that Dallas is a funny example because people our age probably starting watching them when they went to all those Super Bowls 10+ years ago....draw whatever conclusions you want

It's a combination of many things but being a Dallas fan at their age *IS* funny. I think it depends on where you live. If you are from Boston/NE area, I think you are almost "obligated' to be a Boston Red Sox/Patriots fan. I honestly respect that as much as I dislike both of those teams. The same goes with Yankees/Giants and Green Bay packers, etc.. I live just outside the Bronx and you don't see ANY Boston Red Sox fans. I honestly rarely see Jets fans too which I think is odd.
These a certain sense of pride that comes with these areas that's different from other areas, IMHO. Your speech above does not acknowledge that when you used a blanket statement to compare people with every state.
As I have said, I take pride in being a NY'er. I love NY teams. That doesn't mean I am saying others cannot like who they want. That's their decision. However, I do get some enjoyment out of picking on some Dallas fan that lived through the Dallas revolution.
