tips on joining the military

I just got fired from my job today after 6 years of employment. I am concidering joining the military but dont have many ideas on where to start.

A friend in the Army suggested joining the Airforce. Something about they treat their people better. Anyone have suggestions on which branch?

Also I have some other things that might be problems. Im thinking a recruiter might be best for those though.

Marine Corps....end of story

of course I would say that tho...what are you looking to do while your in the military...mechanic? grunt? communications? supply? I was a radio operator with an infantry battalion 3rd bn 8th marines, and I loved it...well not really but I do miss it...made some of the best friends there...but you have to look around an talk to all the branches and see what suits you best

Given the current situation, you might want to rethink that.

yea, in the Coast Guard? j/k

They say the Air Force is the most difficult to get into(stringent wise). Back when I was in HS and preparing to join the AF I had excelled in all areas and was set to go to the academy. 2mo before graduation they found in my hospital records that I had a record of an asthma attack a few months after the age of 12 and dropped my application. I haven't had an asthma attach since that day.......

If I were to join now I'd go either Navy or Marines.

The "Air Force treats their people better" is very true. Though like Adam said, it's harder to get in. I've lived in AF housing and Navy housing while I was active duty and the AF housing was much much better. But that's nothing while I was at FT Sam Houston attending a tri-service school (Orthopedics), the Navy put us up in a dorm like barracks, the Army guys were in open bay style barracks, and the AF put their guys up in 5 star hotels on the Riverwalk. They also paid them separation per diem for everyday they were in school, paid for rental cars, and paid them extra $ for food. Now being the smart AF people that they were, they all pitched in for 1 rental car, ate breakfast and dinner at the hotels for free, and brought sandwich meat and drinks for their lunches. They definitely banked a ton of money.

Needless to say every branch has it's pros and cons. If I had to do it all over again I would have went in the AF just for the sake of better training (I went Hospital Corpsman in the Navy). The higher living and MWR standards would have just been a bonus. Talk to the different recruiters and see what they have to offer you. Right now I believe the Army is offering a huge sign up bonus, but more than likely they'll want you to take some crap job that no one else wants. Good luck.

Someone has to help defend us and the freedom we have left. I wouldn't do it myself, but I think very highly of those that will sacrifice their life for what they believe in.

Less than 13 months to go of the current presidency (or at least the election)!

A good friend of mine, Josh, is in the AF and will be heading to New Zealand soon, then shortly after to Antarctica. I'd join the AF (if I was physically capable) for the chance to have an opportunity like that.

The test to get into the Air Force is the hardest and the pay is the highest. I don't know what the pay scale is like now but when I took the test like 8+/- years ago I would've been E6, I think, and my monthly gross would have been $2030 or $2040, which wasn't worth it to me, so I passed. The other divisions; 2nd is the Navy, 3rd Marines and Army last. Of course each division will claim they are the best, elite, yada yada yada but the reality is the Air Force is the crème de la crème. It's also the place where you are the least likely to end up in Iraq unless you're flying overheard in a recon mission, which I think every person on here actually WANTS to do. Go Air Force. Both of my cousins are in the Navy and they love it, one is in the 7th fleet band and the other is a nurse so I'll recommend Navy as a very close 2nd choice but only if you don't pass the Air Force test. In a very VERY distant 3rd, I won't recommend Marines and what's that other one? Yeah, unless you want to dodge rounds, IED's and suicide bombers, you definitely don't want to join the Army, especially with the impending Iran war.

ok your a moron there is one pay scale for all active duty military (every branch) so the AF doesnt get paid more then other branches not sure where your getting your facts from...you want money then you should join the army they give the highest bonuses, like it has been stated a few times you wil be treated better...just cuz your in the AF also doesnt mean your going to be in a plane...which was another dumb statement you made...not to mention if your lookin to be a pilot join the navy they have the best pilots in out military. and who told you the test is harder...its on e test for alll branches and its called the ASVAB depending on how you score is how you can decide which occupational you qualify for in that service...but it is the same test. so get your facts straight

SO LIKE I SAID IN MY OTHER POST DONT ASK FOR PEOPLE OPINIONS THIS IS HUGE DECISION YOU NEED TO MAKE WITHOUT LISTENING TO EVERYONES OPINION...SO TALK TO ALL THE SERVICES AND SEE WHAT SUITS YOU BEST
