yea, they setup the entire event around kimbo... backyard brawl/street ceritfied... c'mon man. I know you, and 95% of everyone here, are huge Kimbo fans, but you can't deny this. I will continue to watch all of Kimbos fights cause he has a ton of potential and his fights are exciting, but he should not be a main event until he fights a contender.

When Tyson was in his prime...if you were managing a top heavyweight prospect....would you stick him in the ring with Iron Mike his first or second pro fight? Even someone like Evander Holyfield or Riddick Bowe? MMA has a shorter lifespan for fighters vs boxing due to the physical strain put on the body so the fighters don't get 15-20 pro fights before fighting contenders. IF they're lucky they get a handful before having to fight the top flight guys. The next guy Kimbo fights SHOULD be a "gate keeper"...someone that is maybe a bit younger than Tank and has good MMA experience but is not one of the top guys. Everyone wants to see him fight a top contender, but that just makes NO sense at all for his career. As long as he makes a small step up in competition in his next fight, I'll be satisfied. I don't expect to see him in the ring w/ someone that EliteXC backs like Ricco Rodrigeuz or Andre Silva for at least 2-3 more fights IF he continues his success.

Benny - too early in his career to say yes or no to your comment either way. Saying that is just ignorent at this point as you haven't seen if he is able to do more than stand up with someone. Also, remember, Chuck "Iceman" Liddell is one of the best ever in MMA and he did it with good takedown defense and great standup...let me know the last fight you saw him actually on the mat grappling/wrestling someone. So saying his overall game isn't good enough is unfair also, if you're GREAT at one thing you can win a lot of fights and be very successful. I.E. Iceman or Royce Gracie with his ground game...Gracie rarely if ever won a fight standing up, he was a submission specialist.

I'm not saying that he should def fight a top contender right away like Brock did (too risky IMO), but any main event should showcase actual top contenders, not two guys at the bottom of the barrel. He should be treated like every other MMA fighter. He needs to fight his way to the top and also needs to fight his way to the main event.

the fights that night were amazing. Like you said, one of the best nights of MMA fights that I can remember, but it would have been way better if one of the other fights was the main event.

bumping this up.....

Kimbo was far from impressive on Saturday night. James Thompson is a big joke with a weak chin and he was close to beating Kimbo. If Thompson had any sort of ground game then he would have won easily.

It appears that they already setup kimbo's next fight and it will be against Brett Rogers. Rogers is a brawler and will stand with Kimbo, so the ground game shouldn't come into place this fight, but as soon as he faces anyone that knows how to wrestle then it's over for him.

thoughts?

I agree, someone with a good ground game will own kimbo. How many fights is he going to get to just end by popping someones ear? I love Kimbo but he needs some work if he really wants to compete.

I personally didn't like how it seemed like Kimbo had the ref in his back pocket.

And personally the best fight of the night was the one between the two women.

"The Iceman" Chuck Liddell has ZERO NADA ZILCH ground game...and is one of the best MMA fighters ever at 205. Period. Not having a great ground game doesn't automatically dismiss you as a great MMA fighter.

Also, I think a lot of people continually forget...this was Kimbo's THIRD REAL MMA FIGHT! No athlete hits their peak in their 3rd professional appearance. A QB in his 3rd start? Pitcher in his 3rd start? Boxer in his 3rd pro fight isn't going to see a top contender. Kimbo is being brought along slowly. Is James Thompson a top flight fighter? No. But he was a significant step up in competition from Tank Abbott and Bo Cantrell. James Thompson had a record of 16-8 going into the fight w/ some credible wins. Granted he had been knocked out a few times as of late, but it's MMA - it happens. I give Kimbo credit for not folding in the fight when things didn't go his way. He battled back and earned a tough W over a game fighter. I don't think Kimbo's next fight will be Brett Rodgers, as much as Rodgers would like it to be. Kimbo needs a few more fights before fighting a prospect of Rodgers caliber. Kimbo has shown he has made some progress - but still has a long way to go.
