And people don't believe me when I tell them were not supposed to live in the arid southwest.

Mike if you're interested in this kind of thing I would read Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner its a pretty fascinating read about how we settled the southwest by Damming/diverting the flow of the Colorado River and its Tributaries and the Huge ecological impact it had on the wildlife of the system.
