Going to look @ a bike this weekend...

Found a 1980 Honda CB750 for a good price... I've never bough a street legal bike before... anything I should look for as potential problems?

I want to make it look like this Minus the checkers... And I would do someting different with the rear fender...

Cafe Racers FTW!

Those CBs are classic! Look for rust in the tank, leaky fork seals, and usual maintenance items like brakes and such. I had an 84 CB700SC, I loved it, I have an 84 CB650SC now. The 650 is sitting in the garage at my parents' house, I need to go get it so I can rebuild the carbs and I'm thinking about the motor too... my mum just bought a 599 so with the 919 space is getting short!

My 700S just after I got it:

And right about when I sold it:

The Triumph is what started the whole Hooligan Bikers thing

Im hoping this bike turns out to be better than I'm expecting... I dont want to have to do alot of work to it and wold love to ride it, but I prettymuch dont want to drive it till its all pimped out... LoL... I atleast have to have the new tank, ehxaust, and seat fabbed up and ready for paint before I can go riding... I'm also thinking about some simple faring for a bit of aerodynamics...

There's definitely something different about the old school Japanese bikes (I'm talking about the real old school ones like the 70s-80s). I daily drove my 700 for a long time, I got more looks on that than when I took my roommates Katana out. All the GSX-Rs, YZF, CBR, ZX-whatever just look like the same thing to a lot of people, you see them all the time. Plus on a fully-faired plasticy bike you never get the waves/respect from the Harley/cruiser guys, too bad. It's just about having something a little different. Plus I find the older bikes to be a bit less peaky, my S, despite shaft drive, would walk from most stock new 600s, and it was comfortable enough to take on 10 hour rides frequently.

I've been riding bikes for a long time, and I do like sportbikes a lot, but I think too many people get them as a first bike. Pretty much anything you get is going to be really fast, probably faster than you need anyway. The current and previous models of 100+ hp 600cc bikes are awesome, but complete overkill, the companies are in a horsepower number war and I really don't think the bikes are safe for new riders. It gives the rest of us a bad image when 16 year old kids are ripping up the northway "stuntin" or whatever the fuck on their bright yellow crotch rocket. Not trying to be a dick, most of us have done that, but it's hard to resist when you're riding something with so much power.

I'm planning on selling the 650 because it's more of a cruiser style bike, and I'm going to look for a 86 VFR500. It's small, but I test drove one a while back for my gf at the time, and I loved it. Too bad that one had a nasty knock... I also absolutely love the first gen CBR (Hurricane) and the old school FZR 1000, little tiny seat, huge foglight style headlamps, fast as hell. It's about what style you like, and what you're going to use it for, since pretty much everything will be fast enough.

Good luck with that 750, like I said they are classics. Honda totally dominated the market in the '70s when those came out. You can get any part you need for it (an incentive to get honda bikes in general), and there are clubs all over for the 750. Also in some areas there are vintage race clubs specifically for a few models, I don't know about the 750, but I have a 76 350 twin sitting at home too, and there are definitely leagues for that.
Both bikes had high production, so there are a lot of them around still. They may not be super flashy, but go to a real meet with either of those that's clean and you'll get plenty of looks and respect from the guys who know.
