The Monster doesn't really look all that much better, tbh. I mean, it does look different but you can find a brand new SV for just about the price of an older used Monster, and that alone would be enough to convince me to buy a bike that looks a little plainer.

One of the reasons I like Ducati so much is that they still use a space frame, I really don't like the look of molded monocoque frames. The Monster also has a really short rear over-hang and together that just makes the bike look damn mean. I also like the dual exhaust and to me there's no better sounding bike than a Ducati, that's very important. Although in the SV650's defense, it does sound pretty good too.

You can definitely find SV's cheap if you look hard enough. I just picked up my 01 SV650S with 8400 miles on it for $2200 and it doesn't have a scratch. Plus it sounds awesome even stock.

Irishweird00 is on a distinguished road

Ducati is a great company, they put out a great product for someone who can afford to pay to keep it maintained. As long as you keep within factory spec and don't modify the bike to much you can make it last as long as any other bike.

On the other hand they do require more maintenance because of the way the motor is designed. Belt driven, plus high tolerances motor specs = nightmare to keep in spec. Over a 15,000 life of the that particular motor expect to pay upwards of 3+ grand in maintenance alone. Not to mention oil changes, tires, chains.

I can't denounce them because I want a Ducati, but I'm not willing to pay for something that requires that much maintenance over its life. Monsters are very quick, agile and fun motorcycles. They perform pretty close to a sport bike. Power wise, the new Ducati monsters come equip with the 999s motor. so power is not to be questioned.

I wouldn't buy an older model year monster for they are far less reliable and have many problems if they were not well maintained by the owner. the 650's are cheaper yes.

As for your reasoning in buying a monster. "drifting" is non existent on a bike. You can power slide or brake the rear out in a turn, but you best be an experienced rider, I won't even attempt this on a public road because it's stupid and foolish. Cool yes, but stupid. Find a better reason to by a bike other than watching a video of a PROFESSIONAL (mind you) and getting hard over it.
