Ducati Monster?
I planned on toolin around and learning how to drift with it. I don't care for speed and I probably won't be trying to carve any turns with it either and these things go for dirt cheap. I see them go on eBay for 3-4. Why so cheap? Are they junk? Or do people buy them thinking it's going to be some wicked sport bike only to find out they bought it for the wrong reason? I'd more likely buy a 620, no need for a 900 but the 750's and 900's aren't selling for any more. I should probably put this on SFX but I feel more comfortable asking here.

have you ridden bikes before? I would think trying to learn to "drift" a bike is definitely not something for someone who is pretty new to bikes. I don't know much about the monsters other than they are a pretty sweet naked sport bike...
One of the guys around rochester here has a new ducati 1098 and its freaking sweet!

Yeah, used to have a Ninja 750. Been about 5-6 years since I rode though.

bad idea...end of story...they require too much attention and parts are far from cheap!
unless your getting a new 1098...they're more reliable

So you're telling me that over the course of the next 5 years that it would take me to pay off a $20,000 loan on a 1098 I would spend $16,000 in repairs on a $4,000 monster? That seems pretty far-fetched to me.
I also just mentioned that I don't care for speed and I doubt I'll be carving up any turns with it so wouldn't it be a total waste of a 1098 which is basically a street-legal MotoGP bike?
I guess I should instead ask what would be a cheaper alternative to a Monster?

SV650 naked if you like the naked look or the SV650S if you want a half faired bike.

the 1098 is nothing near a street legal version of motogp bike, the only similiar with those 2 bikes is there made by ducati and thats it..and no im not saying its going to cost you 16g's to fix it but you want a bike you can ride correct? because if thats the case that monster will spend more time in a shop getting repaired then being ridden. And like xceebeex said and sv650 is a perfect alternative not too expensive and very reliable
