Oil Change

Well I am getting ready to get the bike out for the season so I need to change the oil and whatnot. I picked up some 5w-40 Synthetic Rotella T, has anyone had any experience with this stuff? From the SV forum a lot of people seem to use it.

Also, any recommendations on a chain wax or lube?

Yea, a lot of people seem to go with the Synthetic Rotella T in 5w-40, that may be because thats what it comes in, I am not sure if they have 10w-40 in synthetic. Should I just go with 10w-40 non synthetic Rotella T instead?

I'm either going to use klotz full syn or golden spectro semi synthetic...

technically when you have a wet clutch you're supposed to use semi synthetic.

I use that Rotella T 5w-40 full syn in my diesel truck lol

As for the chain I would use a chain wax not lube. Lube is very messy and will get all over your pants and wheels. It sucks to clean it. Also remember to clean your chain really well with wd-40 before you lube it up. I definitely recommend buying a grunge brush to help clean the brush...

That makes sense since its a diesel oil.

A lot of people like the diesel oils over the motorcycle specific oil, plus its much cheaper. I paid 16 bucks for 1 gal of full synthentic.

The comment about wet clutches is only partially true. The reason they don't recommend full synthetic with wet clutches is because many of the oils have a energy conservation additives which are not good for the wet clutches. The Rotella T does not have this additive so its fine.

I was leaning towards a wax to begin with because of exactly what you mentioned.

There aren't any energy conservation additives in ANY motorcycle specific oils, full synthetic or not. I'm just going by what another guy who races said. Like I mentioned I may end up using the Klotz full synthetic anyways. In fact, I may look to see if I can get a sponsorship.

Gotcha, I haven't really looked into motorcycle specific oils so I wasn't sure about the energy conservation stuff, but like I said, I think the main reason people say go with semi-syn's is because many of the full syns have that additive.

Anyway, I am guessing that no one here as used the Rotella on their bike and choose to go with the more expensive stuff.....

yeah I don't think anyone on here has... I've heard of people using it on the R6 forums though. Give it a shot for a couple months, see how it goes!

I like klotz because it's red and smells like candy

Haha, I guess its good if your oil smells good. But hopefully you only smell it when you are changing the oil anyway.

I think I might give the Rotella a try and see how I like it.

Is PJ1 Black Label a wax?

No, its a lube designed for non-o-ring chains. Most newer chains are all o-ring style chains. I'm not sure if the stock chains are, so it might be fine for you. I need to use something o-ring safe, but I'll probably use spectro chain wax.
