New project

Finally getting around to this engine deal. I bought one from a jy with 8,000miles on the clock from an 2004 Pontiac grand am. Its a 3400SFI as compared to the 3100SFI that I currently have. Appears to be in great shape, and just looking through the oil cap it looks VERY clean. Seems to be the perfect start to an engine build. Ive also got just about all the sensors Id need if I did and OBD2 swap. Which means I could actually tune this sucker!

anyway heres a couple pics...

Just thought I'd share...

Why not a 3800 supercharged?

I absolutely LOVED mine in my MonteCarlo, and your car is MUCH lighter....

I duno how much lighter mine is if at all. My car weighs roughly 3200-3300lbs. I didnt wanna go with the 3800 in general cause its much more work. Not only would I need the 3800 engine ( and fixing what might be wrong with it ) but Id need a new tranny as well. Id also need new half-shafts in which you need to half to keep your stock wheel bearings but have the tranny accept the half-shafts, just to name a new differences, although theres MANY more. Just in general more work than I would like to deal with. With this engine swapping to OBD2 theres minimal wiring differences and I can also get this engine to go just as fast if not faster than the 3800S/C for less money. And it weighs less, and I know more about the 60*v6's than I do the 90*v6's.

Next time Im up at the valley I wanna try and get the car weighted ( if they still do that and on wed. nights Im not sure if they do or not )

But yeah its alot of work, but these motors respond very well to mods so it makes it worth while. Just trying to some a little bit more research on some parts before I start buying parts for it. But its not as easy of a car to mod than others... probably why not many people bother with em.

How much HP does the 3.1 have? Doesn't that 3.4 only have 170hp? I had that in my old V6 camaro, it was a dog.

What are you plans for it? Any FI?

The 3100SFI makes 175hp/195tq and the 3400 SFI makes ~190hp/205tq ( varies between models ) Your camaro had 160hp/180tq. It was a different version of the 3.4 for the RWD application. The camaro with the 3.1 had 140hp/180tq.

For right now I think im just gonna P&P the UIM and LIM, 65mm TB and a stage 1 cam with these specs:

Duration : 209.4º intake / 213.1º exhaust (@ 0.050" lift)
Lift @lobe : 0.305" intake / .308" exhaust
with 1.6 roller rockers : 0.488" intake / 0.493" exhaust
Lobe Seperation Angle : 110º
Intake Centerline : 108.1º

Its not very much currently, but I dont have the time or money to do what I would really like to do cause I cant have the car down for too long. Its the only thing I drive and I still need money for school.
