Problem with the SVT, maybe you can help.....

Ok well I am not sure if any of you will be able to help but I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Anyway, I just recently got a 98 SVT Contour and the check engine light is on and the codes that I pulled were that Banks 1 and 2 were both running rich. Now the first thing I did was pulled the MAF out and cleaned it up to see if that fixed it and the light came back on. Now I don't think it is the o2 sensors because it is running rich, if it was lean then it could possibly be the o2's. So I am not sure what else to check. My other thoughts were a possible vacuum leak or clogged EGR valve or something. There are no obvious vacuum leaks that I can hear, but I am not sure exactly how to test that to be sure and I don't know how to check the EGR valve.....

Any input guys?

If your o2 sensors are not functioning correctly, the car can most definitely run rich. I would definitely check those out. Sucks that they are somewhat pricey to replace depending on how many there are.

If there was a vacuum leak or post-maf intake leak, the car would run lean, so its probably not that, and I'm not sure about the EGR.

Maybe pick up a Haynes manual at advance and see if there are any "things to check" listed with the codes you pulled.

Yea I already posted the problem on the contour forum and they said that it shouldn't be the o2 sensors and it was most likely just that the MAF had to be cleaned, thats why I tried that first. The other things listed to check was vacuum leaks and injectors.

There is at least 3 o2 sensors in the car, possibly 4 so I would imagine that if one of those were bad there would have to be some sort of other code saying whether it was upstream or downstream....

yeah exactly, normally a code would show up saying that one of the o2 sensors has malfunctioned, but you never know.

Well hopefully I figure something out soon otherwise I am gonna have to have someone do it cause I have to get it home to get inspected in less than 30 days.....

Other than that the car runs great and its a ton of fun. Hopefully I can get it to some autocrosses, it should do pretty well.
