Actually, the candle's not that much of a distraction in the picture. What I would have done is used the rule of thirds and framed the picture with the tree at the right edge of the frame, and Tuckar at the bottom of the frame.
As for getting your pictures to come out right....does your auto mode set the ISO for you? If not, thats something you can try playing with. My SD550 on manual mode lets me set the ISO, and then it sets aperture and shutter. Check your booklet to see what you can set in auto, and what settings you have on manual. You'll do you pictures a good thing by learning what to set on manual
