Sucks. I sold my 2g Eclipse the second it started hinting at future problems.

That could be one of a thousand internal trans parts. Taking it off on that car is prob a 6/10 on the difficulty scale (assuming you guys dont have a lift).

Start simple. Check the master for the Hydraulic clutch Fluid. I'm assuming this is a standard by the use of "gear box" Sometimes the "master cylinder" for the Hydraulic clutch fluid stops working. Therefore the car is not releasing. Easy repair if that it. If it was the clutch itself I'm sure he would have known it was starting to go.

"tell him to push in the clutch" - that's the very first thing that popped into my head too

yeah you should be able to listen closely and that might help you determine if its a gearbox issue or a clutch issue...

Can you put it into gear with the car off, and the clutch in?

well that means its not the "links" lol and its most likely not the clutch, but it still could be an issue. Seems like there are issues with synchros.

pulling a tranny on a front wheel drive car = major PITA I know domestic sport cars are not the fav around here but gotta love rear wheel drive tranny swaps takes less than a day if you have had a little practice. I would suggest getting a tranny from a salvage yard put in a new clutch throw out bearing etc when its out cause why would you wanna do it again later and call it a day.
