mine are worse...they are vaccuum, and perhaps the most unreliable system introduced to a 4x4. it lasted only from 98-00, thats how crappy it is. i was pretty much forced to modify it to be like the new ones because it stopped locking in

you will def increase the wear and tear by leaving them locked in, plus maybe see some gas mileage decrease because you are turning all the axles. basically if you're driving around in the snow you can go in and out of 4x4 without having to turn the hubs everytime. i actually modified my front hubs to live front axles cause the auto locking ones suck balls, which is pretty much how the newer ones come anyways. now lock it in 4 low and try to turn on dry pavement
I wouldnt do it but chances are you will be fine doing it. if you want to free that locking hub up just pull the hub apart and regrease it chances are thats the issue. plus its a good maintnence thing to do once a season with manual 4x4 hubs as they get a little older. my old exploder was notorios for being a pain to lock in its warn manual hubs until they got regreased. glad my new f150s autohubs work like a champ

are you talking about freeing my hubs up? if so that wasn't the issue. the issue was that the vaccuum system they used to engage was crap, and they got rid of the design within 2 years

I think he was talking to Mike. Mike mentioned his hubs were hard to turn.
