Another Cavi-Mike-ism has begun. You do not understand how tires work or are made. The first 40-50% of a tire's compound is where the silica-based good stuff is that actually grips the road. As the compound gets deeper, is get dramatically harder until at its lowest point it is only there to hold the structure of the tire together. There is a difference. Paying ANYTHING for tires w/ less than 50% tread is stupid.
Tread is there to move water away from the tread blocks so you have grip in the rain. The less tread, the less water you can drive through while still maintaining grip.
They also do NOT handle better when worn, for this reason. You are thinking of a competition DOT racing tire where the compound is uniform throughout and racers often get them shaved for dry use. For this, the only advantage to less tread is that the tread blocks cannot squirm as much. They dont handle better, just feel better under heavy braking.
Again, with the arrogant ignorance on internet forums.

So true in many aspects. Certain people also don't need a damn keyboard to relay facts/information they deal with during 95% of the year, it's just easier...You won't hear me yapping my mouth about Honda shit 'cause I don't know a D16Z6 from a B18 if you threw it in my face. Maybe not that far, but the point is clear enough.....It also doesn't take a rocket scientist to go read up on any one given topic and know WTF you're talking about before posting some stupid incorrect technical bullshit on the internet. Got enough of that floating around these forums as is...
Only facts folks, only facts.....

I sold the RE070's off my STI but they still have 90+% treadlife as I only drove on them for like a month or 2 and no miles...does that make me a bad person?
BTW - I <3 reading the last 2 pages of this.

No, driving an STI in the first place makes you a bad person. hehehe
For real, for most street tires, the literal first 50% is where the functional rubber is. Anything after that is garbage. Tires with 90% left are still 40% good to go.

Buying used tires is just a very risky event. You sold presumably a great, mildly used set of quality tires to someone that needed them. Nothing wrong with it, but still just a highly risky event on the buyers end. Doesn't make you evil or anything. They're the only part of your vehicle that touches the road and and there's a lot more riding on them than just the car. You just never know if the "80% treadlife" used tires you bought have broken cords or internal de-vulcanizing (delam) that can be a root cause for disaster if pushed too hard. Just because they physically look good doesn't mean they are.
To each his own on this topic. It's a lose-lose argument here no matter which way I say my peace about it......

Good use of vulcanizing, good word, not used enough.
Since this thread has gone off the deep end already, anyone know where I can get self-vulcanizing cloth electrical tape?
